A Thought on ‘Island-Living Style’
Sometimes I read an article about interior design, and instead of pulling away the finer points of “Island-Living Style,” I’m stuck focusing on which editor thought including the insensitive tidbits romanticizing post-colonial Caribbean life was a good idea. In the latest edition of Lonny Magazine they cover an Englishman’s vacation home on Harbour Island. I think what tipped me over the edge was the “cinematic nostalgia” oil painting of an old black servant hanging above the homeowner’s desk (see below). Whether intentional or not, the author (and the owner of the home) are looking upon a time of privilege, racial tensions, sugar and tobacco plantations, and poverty in a way that is only “nostalgic” to colonists. Even the relatively harmless line in the beginning that proudly mentions that the original builder’s great-grandsons performed the renovations to the house makes me uncomfortable. Of course, the line could suggest that the builders’ family have an excellent reputation for construction and architecture; but it could just as easily suggest the family was never able to move past the profession of heavy manual labor. Am I over-thinking this? I hope so.

Arcane’s The Name

Hi Friends! In case you didn’t know, I’ve taken to micro-blogging on tumblr during the week, as it requires less time during the day. So if you are starving for pretty images or fun facts or just your daily dose of doorr, I suggest you all head on over to my tumblr, arcanesthename.tumblr.com (as well as occasionally check back here) for that goodness that I used to post on a daily basis. Sorry for the late notice and I hope it will keep you entertained! It certainly keeps me entertained.

British Things + Rainy Days = Very British Things

1. An image from Lox Papers about what to do with yourself on a rainy day (because it’s always a rainy day in Collegetown), 2. an image of a British lady in a hat because apparently the British love crazy hats, and 3. an image of Grace Kelly marrying Rainier III, Prince of Monaco at the St Nicholas Cathedral in Monaco. Music Festival Style
With Coachella kicking off today, I think it’s safe to say that (1) summer is officially around the corner and (2) it’s time to mark the beginning of the summer music festivals. I’m so sad I’m not going out to LA this year, but I am thinking of booking a ticket to either Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, or Outside Lands. I guess it just depends on whether I prefer a sick lineup or a cool city. In light of the upcoming festivals I made a little design board about what I would wear/buy for the shows. The tent is thrown in because that’s what I wish my sleeping quarters would actually look like at Bonnaroo.

Wool and the Gang shirt, DIY rope necklace, Nars multiple, neon Essie nails, Evian mist, Zara clutch.
Winter Vacation
Welcome, Habitat
Yet another online shelter magazine to add to the bunch…well sort of. This magazine/catalog hails from England and really has such a different feel. (Side note: I appreciate the design diversity. It gets kind of boring to look at spartan French and Scandinavian grey and white decor every day.) Read more about the British home goods store and take a peek at the contents at SFGirlByBay or head over to the iMagazine to see it for yourself. Happy Tuesday.

Ork Posters: City Neighborhood Posters
GO BUY: Ork Posters! City Neighborhood Posters.
This poster site is really cool. The prints themselves are actually pretty simple and I think you can take them with you wherever you go (a.k.a. you don’t need to worry about them being too specific for the current space). Emily, my old roommate, framed two of these for her boyfriend for Valentine’s day as his wall decoration. I think they’re great. Maybe a little masculine but awesome for a living room or something.
