Health Kick
After eating five-too many Shake Shacks, bagel sandwiches, iced coffees with too much sugar, pasta from new and old favorite restaurants (here and here), etc., I’ve finally decided to do my body a favor and eat something green. While my girl, Martha Stewart, serves a mean dose of healthy inspiration on her website Whole Living, there are clearly some other bloggers that make eating healthy look delicious and easy, as well. The website, Canal House, has a great photo-based food blog, which consists of what they cook for lunch. I think I might try to make their “salad of cannellini beans, canned tuna, and tender lettuces and nasturtiums from the garden, served with warm toast“ for lunch next week.

In the meantime, here is my lunch for tomorrow. I’ve never eaten raw asparagus before, but there is no turning back now, as it’s packed and ready for me to bring to work tomorrow. The vinaigrette supposedly breaks down the asparagus starches so the ribbons become pasta-like. Good. I’ve also added chicken because I know that’s what people on a diet love to eat. Blegh.

Quick, someone teach me how to make my own gifs.

Grub Street Food Festival
Hi hi! I can’t even tell you how busy I’ve been these past few days, which is why I haven’t posted anything since September. Thankfully, though, it all ended today around 11am when I handed in my first real law school paper. Now that it’s done with, I’ll have more time for The Important Things in life, such as blogging. Grub Street just announced that they’re hosting an awesome food festival next Saturday, October 16, 2010 on Hester and Essex streets. Vendors include:
Patacon Pisao will motor down from Inwood to bring you Venezuelan plantain sandwiches, and Gloria’s In & Out is coming in from Crown Heights to warm your hands with piping-hot West Indian doubles. Try the new trucks you’ve heard so much about (Kelvin Slushy and Mexicue), and decide which lobster roll you dig better (Luke’s or Ditch Plains). There’ll be tacos from Cascabel; barbecue from Char No. 4, Malbon Bros, and Georgia’s Eastside; sandwiches from Cheeky, Mile End, An Choi; balkan burgers from Employees Only; baked goods from Grandaisy, Hot Blondies, Pies-N-Thighs, and Pain D’Avignon; and coffee from Kickstand to wash it all down.
And that’s just to name a few. There will be 40 vendors total. The space is actually quite tiny, but I’m sure that will just make everything more exciting. I’ll be there and hopefully I’ll convince some of my friends to come along with me…right Emma? See you so soon, NYC.
Bib Gourmand
Today Michelin leaked part of their Bib Gourmand list, the JV version of their 2011 Michelin Guide list. These are restaurants that have been dubbed tasty gems, but have not been awarded the coveted Michelin stars (and are thankfully without the high, high meal price). I have been to a number of these restaurants and could not agree more with this selection. Peep below the fold for: 91 restaurants: 2 course + 1 glass wine for under $40.

First Day of School
Well, tomorrow officially marks my first day of school. I did my reading on Sunday and am reviewing some of it tonight, but while I take short breaks from reviewing I’m also thinking about my first day of school outfit (which I think I’ll save for Thursday since I only have 2 classes tomorrow and 4 classes on Thursday) and (of course) what I’ll eat for breakfast tomorrow. The answer: one of these delicious egg recipes. Depending on how much time I have, I’ll either make the “egg pizzas” using whole wheat bread and grated parmesan instead of english-muffins and mozzarella, or “eggs rothko” again using whole wheat bread instead of challah and good ole Cabot instead of Grafton. It’s (hopefully) going to be a good day. Click below to see the recipes printed here.
French Toast
Sometime in early June, my friends and I all woke up at 9am on a sunny Sunday morning and thought it would be a grand idea to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Equipped with iced whole milk lattes and San Pellegrinos we set out for our long walk to Prime Meats. I’d heard legends about ”the Frankies” and their empire via NYMag and Sam Sifton, so it was a real treat when my friends all seemed equally as gung ho about waiting out the “epic line” to eat there. To our surprise, there wasn’t much of a line at all (though the staff did manage to keep us standing around for a good half hour), and the food was “very good,” so all in all, a great meal. Which brings me back to this post–featuring marscapone stuffed french toast–as my recipe for this Wednesday, which by the way, is not at all what I ate that morning, but you know similar enough. Prime Meats has a knack for making simple foods very, very well. And their french toast with bacon was no exception. This recipe (and maybe all french toast now) reminds me of awesome, slow, New York City Sunday mornings, which is to say, I now only want to eat french toast when I am slightly hung over, have mascara smudged under my eyes, and in great restaurants (sorry diners). Here’s to brunch.
Dinner in Paris
I am taking no such trip to Paris this summer, but if you are, here are a list of restaurants recommended by designer and foodie Dries Van Noten.

Vanity Fair’s Summer Agenda 2010: New York Edition
I am such a summer girl. Maybe it’s the warm weather, the longer days, the clothes, maybe I associate it with summer camp, and freedom, and travel, or maybe it’s all of the events that New York City offers its residents as a reward for putting up with the putrid sidewalk odors and the unbearably hot nights (even with your AC on). My guess is it’s probably all of the above, but the latter definitely makes living in the city in the summer fun. I already have tickets for the Belmont Stakes and Edwarde Sharpe and the Magnetic Fields. But…what about all the dining alfresco and the movies in the park? I kind of want to do everything on this list. Who’s with me?
